What Locksmith Work Really Costs in Columbia, Missouri
Nobody plans to call a locksmith. That is the whole problem: you call one twice in a lifetime, you have no reference price, and the number you hear could be fair or could be double.
So here is what actually moves the price of a locksmith job in Columbia, Missouri, and the four questions that turn a suspicious quote into a fair one.
The four parts of every quote
Every honest quote is built from the same four pieces:
- The call-out. Driving to you, at the hour you called.
- The labour. How long the job takes, which depends far more on the door than on the lock.
- The hardware. The key blank, the cylinder, the lock body — or nothing at all, if yours can be rekeyed.
- The programming, when there is a vehicle involved. This is the piece that quotes love to leave out.
A quote that skips the fourth item is not a cheap quote. It is the first half of a more expensive one.
What makes a job cost more
The hour. A Tuesday at eleven in the morning and a Sunday at two in the morning are not the same job, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
The door. A steel frame, a reinforced plate, a lock painted over three times: all of it adds time. A wooden interior door with a standard cylinder is the easy case, and it is also the common one.
The key. A plain house key is cut in seconds. A car key with a transponder has to be programmed against the vehicle, and some models need two working keys present before they will accept a third. That is not a trick to charge more; it is how the car is built.
The urgency. Being locked out with a child inside, or with a business waiting to open, is a different service from a lock that has been sticking for a month.
Four questions to ask before anybody drives out
- What is the total, including parts and programming? If the answer is a range and never a number, that is information too.
- Does that include the key programming, or is that extra? For a vehicle, this is the single most common surprise.
- What happens if the job is bigger than described? A good answer explains the extra cost before starting, not after.
- Are you the person coming, or a call centre? A local shop can tell you what your job costs because it does the same jobs in the same city every week.
What you should never pay for
You should not pay for a rekey you did not ask for, for a lock replaced when a cylinder would have done, or for a “diagnostic” that is really just the call-out under another name. And you should never be asked to pay in cash before the work is finished.
